Violent clash claims six in Delta community

At least six people were said to have been killed in Ughevwughe community, Ughelli-South Local Government Area of Delta State in a violent clash between groups vying for the president-general position of the community.
Also, seven others, who sustained serious injuries, have been hospitalised, while property estimated at N20 million were destroyed. Hundreds of people have fled the community.
According to investigation, the contenders are from Ohere District with three quarters – Ekrevwere, Ekrovie and Ekropeki – where the position was zoned to. An indigene of the community, Mrs Ighofuela Ukre, alleged that one of the groups initiated the attack.
She said:
“It started because of the struggle for the position of the president-general between two contestants.… Ughevwughe has a way of doing its things.
The community will swear in new executives committee to pilot the affairs of the community for the next three years on September 23, while the election to the various offices will hold on August 10, 2014 in accordance with the community’s constitution.
“The position of the president-general, zoned to Ohere District which comprises Ekrevwere, Ekrovie and Ekrokpeki quarters, according to the community’s agreement, will be rotated among the quarters.
The incumbent president is from Emese District which comprises Iduvwughele, Uduvwoku and Ekrore quarters, from which he emerged.” Ukre said the clash between the two constants led to the death of one Efe Igbule (26) and Obevukpora Christopher Otunu (36).
“Those injured as a result of the shoot-out between the groups include Collins Andrew, Lucky Uti, Smart Ogbemudia, Samuel Ogharayemre, Dennis Omagbemi, Efe Jite. Jite is seriously injured and is receiving treatment at the hospital. They used a car to crush his legs.
“Igbule died when he was being rushed to the clinic by Obevukpora Christopher Otunu who was also later killed.
“As you can see these five motorcycles were burnt during the fight and houses worth N20 million were destroyed,” she added. However, a police source said that one Godwin Sigbenu had been arrested with guns found in his possession.
