Six children drown in Lagos boat mishap

At least six children were feared drowned in Lagos yesterday when a canoe conveying 14 children and other passengers collided with a fibre boat at Ojo Local Government Area.
At press time the exact of number of the passengers drowned could not be ascertained but no fewer than eight children were rescued while frantic efforts were still ongoing to search for the remaining passengers.

The incident occurred at Irewe, a coastal community in Ojo Local Government Area. It was learnt that the fibre boat ran into the wooden canoe conveying the children. The General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Femi Oke- Osayintolu, said investigation into the cause of the accident was still ongoing.

He said: “The tragic incident occurred at Ojo Local Government, Irewe area when a fibre boat ran into a canoe carrying 14 children. The canoe driver has been rescued.” Osanyintolu added that five children were taken to the Igando General Hospital for treatment while three of them had been discharged. The GM said efforts were still ongoing to rescue the remaining children.
