It was a tragic end for a wedding guest in Calabar, Cross River State
on Saturday as he was crushed to death.
The victim, identified simply
as Francis, was trying to light a stick of cigarette when a tanker ran
over him. He died instantly. This prompted irate youths to beat the
driver to death with a pestle.
The driver, whose name could not be ascertained at press time, had
gone to deliver Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS) otherwise called petrol at
Eddy Excel Filling Station located at No 50, Palm Street. He was driving
out of the area after discharging the product when the tanker crushed
Francis’ head.
The late Francis, who was a guest at a traditional wedding which took
place opposite the station, was oblivious of the fact that the tanker
was close by, although others who sat with him had fled. “The driver had
finished discharging fuel and was driving out when I heard ‘kup kup’ as
he was trying to apply break to slow the truck down.
But the truck kept going and the wedding guests who were seated on
one side of the road took to their heels but Francis did not see the
truck early enough and it crushed his head,” a resident of the area, who
gave his name as Ndarake, said. The witness said the victim, who was
seated, was trying to light a cigarette and did not see the truck early
enough to escape alongside others. He added:
“The truck crushed him from behind, spilling out his brain on the
road. “All we heard was ‘kpoo’ and his brain scattered on the road. When
people saw what had happened, they went after the truck driver. “After
killing the driver, the mob went to the filling station and pulled down
all the eight service pumps, ransacked the offices and destroyed the
glass doors and windows.
