Street sweepers protest unpaid salaries

  • Govt not owing them, says Perm Sec

Highway sweepers yesterday stormed the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment to demand payment of their five months’ salary arrears.

Although officials of the ministry claimed the sweepers were at the Lagos State Secretariat for official duties and posting, it was gathered that some of the sweepers last received their N12,000 monthly salary since May, 2015.
This came as a military officer reportedly knocked down and killed one of the highway sweepers, identified simply as Bisi, on the Third Mainland Bridge.
The sweepers said that on several occasions, the government had promised to pay their salaries but only to renege on the promise at the end of the month.
Another sweeper, who also did not want her name mentioned, said despite the hazard they faced, they could still be made to suffer to get the N12,000 salary. But the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr Toyin Onisarutu, said the sweepers were invited by the ministry.
