‘I stole to save my mother’s life’

One of the three suspects arrested by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos State Command, for stealing prepaid meters, has told operatives of NSCDC that he embraced the crime because he desperately wanted to save the life of his sick mother.

The suspect, Uzor Anyanwu, said he had not been paid for four months by the contractor he was working for and was also being called from his village to send money for the treatment of his sick mom Sick and worried, he had sold two prepaid meters for N40,000.
He was later tracked down and arrested by NSCDC officials. His mom also died. According to NSCDC, the prepaid meters belonged to the Ikeji Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC).
Anyanwu was arrested along with other suspects, Hassan Usman and Peter Etamen. According to NSCDC Lagos State Commandant, Gabriel Abafi, one of the suspects, Usman was arrested on October, 28, 2015, while vandalising transformer cables along Ketu- Ikosi Road.
Usman was said to have confessed to the crime. He however was granted bail, but nobody came for him. Officials of NSCDC have concluded plans to charge him to court. Anyanwu 29, was arrested for stealing and selling prepaid meters at Ajuwon area of Ogun State.
