Fire guts Oko-Baba settlement, Ebeano Supermarket in Lagos

Goods and property worth millions of naira were yesterday lost to fire incidents, which broke out at Oko-Baba Sawmill, Ebute-Meta, Ebano Supermarket in Lekki and Ajegunle, Lagos. This was as two persons escaped death when a house collapsed in Badagry.

The Oko-Baba inferno, which was still ranging at press time, gutted several shanties and planks. It came a few months after a similar incident occurred at the place. A witness said the fire started about 4:15pm from one of the chalets in the area. He said: “Someone was refilling a generator which was in use in one of the chalets used by prostitutes. The generator caught fire and exploded.
The fire spread quickly to other structures, which by their nature are combustible.” Officials of the Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other emergency responders were on ground either to contain the fire or provide security.
The Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe, said it was too early to determine the cause of the inferno. He said: “We are still battling to bring the fire under control. We have already deployed four fire trucks. But as things are now, we are deploying more trucks to Oko- Baba.”Fadipe said a house was on fire at 171 Orodu Street, Ajegunle, Apapa. He added:
“Fire trucks from Isolo and Sari Iganmu were on ground. Also, we recorded serious outbreak of fire at Ebano Supermarket, Lekki. Two fire trucks were deployed to the location.” According to him, about six fire calls were received yes-terday alone which destroyed property worth millions of naira.
