Lagos-Ibadan Expressway gridlock nightmarish–Motorists

It was lamentation galore for motorists and commuters plying Lagos- Ibadan Expressway yesterday as they spent more than four hours from Warewa/ Arepo axis to Lagos owing to potholes on several portions of the road.

The motorists, especially workers who had woken up early to resume work in their various offices, were overwhelmed by long queue of vehicles and trucks struggling for right of way on the expressway. The gridlock was further compounded by the early morning downpour which resulted into flooding on the ever-busy road.
The expressway has been in this mess in the last three weeks as its contractor, Messrs Julius Berger, has suspended construction works owing to the alleged inability of Federal Government to pay for the work already done. Bemoaning the man-hour lost on the road, Mr Idowu Adegbaju, a civil servant with the Lagos State Government, said he left home around 7am with the hope of getting to the office before 7:40am, but “as you can see, this is 8:30am and I am still here”. He berated the Federal Government for playing politics with citizens’ lives.
