We’ve lost our livelihood, say Oko-Baba fire victims

Some traders and residents of Oko- Baba Sawmill, Ebute-Metta, Lagos State, which was gutted by fire on Tuesday, wept profusely yesterday over their losses.
Some of the people disclosed that the shops served as their homes and offices. Some of the traders were yesterday at the burnt scene, wearing forlorn look on their faces. Some of them were too heartbroken to speak with journalists.
Others had tears running down their cheeks.
One of them said that the fire was caused by a prostitute, not by a generator as speculated and rumoured by many on Tuesday. The prostitute, residing in a motel, was said to have left a meat she was frying on a gas cooker and went somewhere else.
The meat apparently got burnt and soon the gas exploded. One of the traders, Sunday Emmanuel, a pap seller, with tears filled eyes, said: “This was where we used to get our daily bread. It is also home for many of us. In just one fell swoop, we lost everything. How do we start?
Who will help us? “I had to beg a friend last night to allow me spend the night in his house. I don’t know where I will sleep today. The machine I use in grinding maize when I want to prepare pap was burnt in the fire. I have lost my only source of money.”
