Two additional suspects arraigned over Falae’s abduction

Two more persons, suspected to be kidnappers of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Chief Olu Falae, were arraigned yesterday before a High Court sitting in Akure, Ondo State.

The accused, Abdulkadir Umar and Babawuro Kato, were arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja while the five suspects who had been earlier charged to court and remanded in prison custody were apprehended by the police. Kato and Umar had confessed that they shared part of the N5 million ransom paid for the Afenifere chieftain’s release.
At the resume hearing of the case witnessed by hordes of armed security agents, the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) sought the approval of the court to withdraw the earlier charges preferred against the five accused to be replaced with new ones with all the seven persons.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Femi Joseph, said the security agents were on the trail of other suspects. The offences, according to the prosecution, are contrary to Section 2 of Anti-Kidnapping and Anti-Abduction Law, 5(1) (a), Section 3(11)(b), Section 6(b) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act, Cap R11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and Section 1(2)(a) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Cap R11, Vol. 14, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. After the charges were translated to them in Hausa, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
