Heavy shooting in Lagos as men in army, naval uniforms attack police command

Four policemen were killed while several others were injured when armed men attacked the Marine Police Command yesterday at Onikan, Lagos State.

The attackers also stole one of the gunboats on the premises. A source attached to the Marine Police said the gunmen, suspected to be oil pipeline vandals, were in Army and Navy uniforms.
They stormed the Marine Police about 2am and started shooting sporadically. They later made away with one of the six gunboats donated to the command by the former Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, to fight waterway criminals. “We have not been able to trace or locate four of our policemen. We do not know what had become of our men. The gunmen came in speedboats through the water, wearing Army and Navy uniforms.
We thought they were naval officers. But they suddenly opened fire. Nobody expected it. The only luck we had was that two gunboats, which were usually anchored at the base, were not there,” the source said The incident occurred just as residents were beginning to ask questions on why the Marine Police had been indolent and inactive when it comes to combating bank robbers who used to come into the state through the waterways and escape via same. “The men stormed the Police Marine base, killed policemen and took away their gunboat. They took away four policemen. We believed those police had been killed and their corpses taken away.
“This is the modus operandi of these vandals. They will kill and go away with the corpses of the slain. They did the same when they attacked Department of State Services (DSS) operatives, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officers and several policemen. They took one of the most powerful gunboats,” a policeman said.
