Two shot as vandals, security agents clash

Two men were shot while commercial activities, including banking services, were grounded on Monday at 4th and 7th avenues in Festac Town area of Lagos State when suspected oil pipeline vandals engaged security agents in a gun duel.

Witnesses said a yet-to-beidentified soldier and barber sustained bullet wounds during the clash.
They were rushed to the hospital where they were battling to live. The clash between the suspected oil thieves and law enforcement agents was said to have started about 5a.m. A police source said trouble started when soldiers stormed the creeks and decided to ‘sanitise’ areas surrounding the canal. The vandals sighted them and opened fire. The soldiers were later joined by policemen.
Diamond and Access banks, which robbers attacked about a month ago, refused to open their doors to customers yesterday. Customers were directed to other banks by security guards. It was gathered that as early as 3:30a.m, the vandals, numbering about 30, converged on 7th Avenue creek by ELCEE Event Centre.
The vandals started shooting at the few security operatives guarding the area. In the process, a soldier and a barber were shot. The barber was still asleep when stray bullet hit him. A resident, who craved anonymity, said the area had been volatile, forcing residents to lie down flat in their apartments over fear of stray bullets.
