The Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sunusi II, has cleared the air over the
controversy surrounding the alleged abduction and forced marriage of
15-year-old Ese Oruru. Ese was said to have been abducted in Bayelsa
State, converted to Islam and married off to a man in Kano.
But Sanusi, who had faced public opprobrium over his alleged role in
the issue, said yesterday he had handed over the girl to the Assistant
Inspector General of Police, Tabari Yabo, in charge of Zone 1, since
last year. He said: “I have since September handed over the girl,
because she is underage, to the Kano AIG, Tabari Yabo, for onward
transportation to her family in Bayelsa. “On understanding that the girl
is after all an underage person of 15 years, I ordered that she should
be taken back to her parents.
