Traffic offence: Driver to sweep police station

A commercial bus driver was ordered by an Ogudu Magistrates Court, sitting in Lagos State, to sweep Ogudu Police Station for flouting traffic law.
Kolawole Olumide, 25, would have to sweep the Ogudu Police Station for five days.

The Magistrate, Mrs. O. Sule Amzat, pronounced the sentence after the driver pleaded guilty to the three-count charge of driving without a license and causing obstruction on the highway.

The Magistrate ordered Olumide to sweep the police station for a minimum of two hours for the duration of the five days and to pay N5, 000 to the Lagos State Government for each of the counts of the charge.
Amzat said: “If the driver failed to comply with the community service imposed, he would be taken into custody for at least six months.”
Amzat also said that the vehicle, a Volkswagen LT bus marked, KRD 833 XH, should be released to the convict upon completion of his sentence.
The prosecutor, Sergeant, Lucky Ihiehie, told the court that Olumide drove against traffic.
Ihiehie said the driver also caused obstruction on the road, refusing to respect other motorists.
Ihiehie added: “The offences contravene Schedule 3, items 1, 24 and schedule 1, item 45 of the Lagos State Traffic.”
