A councillor in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State, Adaka
Amanehi, has been arrested for allegedly defrauding people by coercion.
Amanehi, who was paraded alongside other suspects by the police in Warri
on Wednesday, was accused of “obtaining by false pretence” large sums
of money through phony phone calls with threats to expose his victims if
they did not pay up.
One of his victims, Mrs. Comfort Uzor, had lodged a complaint to the
police that an unknown person had called her to demand that if she did
not pay a specified amount; her illicit affair would be reported to her
husband.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Deputy
Superintendent of Police (DSP), Celestina Kalu, said the number was
tracked to Amanehi as Uzor was told to play along with him. Items
recovered from the suspect, which were displayed by police, included the
exhibit SIM card No. 09026038588 and another SIM card.
“Investigation,” Kalu said, “revealed that the suspect had on several
occasions sent similar text messages of demanding with menace to the
honourable member representing Bomadi/Patani Constituency in the House
of Representatives, His Royal Highness, the Pere of Akugbene Kingdom and
the Iyasere of Akugbene Kingdom.”
