Councillor held for duping victims by coercion

A councillor in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State, Adaka Amanehi, has been arrested for allegedly defrauding people by coercion. 

Amanehi, who was paraded alongside other suspects by the police in Warri on Wednesday, was accused of “obtaining by false pretence” large sums of money through phony phone calls with threats to expose his victims if they did not pay up.
One of his victims, Mrs. Comfort Uzor, had lodged a complaint to the police that an unknown person had called her to demand that if she did not pay a specified amount; her illicit affair would be reported to her husband.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Celestina Kalu, said the number was tracked to Amanehi as Uzor was told to play along with him. Items recovered from the suspect, which were displayed by police, included the exhibit SIM card No. 09026038588 and another SIM card.
“Investigation,” Kalu said, “revealed that the suspect had on several occasions sent similar text messages of demanding with menace to the honourable member representing Bomadi/Patani Constituency in the House of Representatives, His Royal Highness, the Pere of Akugbene Kingdom and the Iyasere of Akugbene Kingdom.”
