There was shock and
lamentation at the Gowon Estate area of Egbeda Lagos State, yesterday, after a
missing two-year-old girl was found inside a well.
The incident, which occurred at the Gowon
Estate, witnessed gasps of shock and loud weeping.
Little Rachael was found inside the
well, barely hours after her father, a lecturer with Lagos State University,
Ojoor (LASU), identified as Gbenga, went to Abeokuta to forcibly collect her
from her mum, Busayo.
The girl was said to have been found
inside the well, minutes after she and father reached their Lagos residence. The
girl’s mum, on hearing the news, fainted.
Busayo’s family was said to have
been angry over the manner Gowon Police Station was handling the incident. One of
them said: “The DPO said we should quickly go and bury the girl. But we want
proper investigation to be carried out.”
Busayo, who resides at Abeokuta, working
with Ministry of Finance, Ogun State, reportedly told the police at Gowon
Estate Police Station that she had always taken good care of Rachael until Gbenga
came to take custody of the girl.
Gbenga wanted to take the girl to
Lagos, but Busayo resisted him. Gbenga however later had his way. Barely hours
after their arrival in Lagos, was Rachael found dead inside the well.
A police source said: “Gbenga
went to Abeokuta to forcibly take Rachael from her mother. He brought her down
to Lagos. On their arrival, Rachael was playing in backyard and fell
inside a well that was uncovered. The couple had two kids; a boy and a girl.
The man wanted his wife to resign and move down to Lagos to stay with him, but
she refused. The man went to Abeokuta on Monday, collected the little girl against
his wife’s wish. He left the little girl to go and buy bread. When he came
back, the girl had fallen inside the well.”
