TELL THE WORLD OUR OWN STORY, OKIRO URGES AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL

The Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Sir, Dr. Mike Mbama Okiro, a retired Inspector General of Police has commended Amnesty International for opening an office in Nigeria and appointing a Nigerian to head the Office.

Dr. Okiro who spoke in Abuja when he received in audience the Country Director, Amnesty International Nigeria, Ambassador M.K Ibrahim, said this is now the time for the Organization to positively project the image of Nigeria and bring before the international Community the real Nigerian story.
According to the PSC Chairman,” I am happy that Amnesty International has gotten an office in Nigeria, manned by a Nigerian. You should now let the world know us the way we are, the way things are and not the way it ought to be”
He also said they should help positively manage and promote the image of the Nigeria Police to the International Community. Dr. Okiro said as the Inspector General of Police, he created human rights Desks in all the Police Divisions in the country to help reduce the incidences of human rights abuse.
He told his visitor that the Commission has set up a Committee to
investigate Police misconduct adding that the Committee has since
resumed work and are already treating several cases of police
misconduct.
The PSC Chairman disclosed that the Commission is in the process of setting up effective Zonal Offices so as to bring the activities of
the Commission closer to the people and also help the Commission
monitor the activities of the police throughout the country.
He briefed the Country Director on the Constitutional Mandate of the Commission to recruit, appoint, promote, discipline and dismiss
Officers and Men of the Police. He noted that the Commission has
exercised this Constitutional Mandate with the fear of God and in
obedience to laid down rules and regulations.
He promised that the Commission is ready to work with the Organization to make life more meaningful for Nigerians and others across the  world.
