Engineers remanded over Synagogue Church building collapse

Justice Lateef Lawal-Akapo of an Ikeja High Court yesterday remanded the two engineers indicted over the collapse of a seven-story building on the premises of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) in Kirikiri Maximum Prison.

This was sequel to their arraignment by the Lagos State government before the court. Trustees of SCOAN, Akinbela Fatiregun, Ogundeji Oladele (the two engineers) and their companies were arraigned on a 111-count charge bordering on manslaughter and criminal negligence.
The judge ordered their arraignment after dismissing the application filed by two of the defendants seeking to quash the charge. Immediately after Akapo dismissed the applications for lacking in merit, defence lawyers made several attempts to convince the court not to proceed with the arraignment. Chief Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), representing SCOAN, argued that since the business of the court was for ruling, it would be improper to proceed with arraignment. On his part, Chief Akpofure (SAN), representing Hardrock Construction Company, said he just lost his mother and would not be able to proceed.
