Navy recovers rifle snatched from policemen

Personnel of the Nigerian Navy have recovered AK47 rifle, snatched from four policemen some weeks back in Lagos State.

The Navy yesterday handed over the recovered rifle to the Lagos State Police Command. The rifle was snatched from the four policemen by some hoodlums.

The rifle marked 22690 was said to have been snatched around 4am them four policemen on March 19, 2016, while they were on patrol duty along the Ijora Badia of the metropolis.

It was gathered that after snatching the rifle, hoodlums, numbering about four, threw it under an abandoned vehicle around Marine Beach.

A Vulcaniser, identified as Banjo Adeboye, found the rifle the next day at his shop and alerted the Naval Task Force deployed to the area.
The navy men retrieved the rifle and brought it to the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT's base in Apapa.
Handing over the rifle to policemen from the Ijora Division armoury, the Commander, NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Abraham Adaji, said the rifle had 30 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition.
He explained that after receiving the rifle from Adeboye, he and his men examined it and discovered that it had police markings all over it. They immediately contacted the police.
Adaji said: "In the course of investigation, we got information that some hoodlums attacked a police patrol van on March 19 and snatched the rifle. The policemen pursued the hoodlums and in that process, the hoodlums threw the rifle under an abandoned vehicle.
"As I speak with you, the rifle has been recovered and some of the men involved in the incidence have been arrested. What we have done is a formal handover of the rifle to its owners-the armoury of the Nigeria Police- after they presented evidence that substantiated the navy's investigation. The rifle was found by a Vulcaniser near his place of work. He just came across the rifle and alerted naval men in the area that were on duty. We are delighted we have Nigerians that are not only patriotic, but also security conscious. The havoc that rifle would have caused in wrong hands can best be imagined."
Representing the police at the handover ceremony,   was the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), in charge of Ijora Police Station, a Superintendent of Police (SP), Mr. Kayode Ayeni.
Ayeni said:  “Our men, who were on duty patrol, were attacked by the hoodlums around 4.30am on that fateful day at Ijora. After the manhunt for the hoodlums, we were able to arrest two among the suspects. They are now in our custody.”
