Three gangs, which specialised in kidnapping and robbery in Enugu
metropolis and other parts of the state, have been smashed by the
police.
Parading some of the suspects before journalists, the Commissioner of
Police, Nwodibo Ekechukwu, said the first suspect,Etim Amos of Abiakpo
Ibo Road, Ikot-Ekpene, masterminded the abduction of a lawyer, John
Abugu, at GRA, Enugu. According to the CP, the suspect was also behind
the abduction of Mrs. Jane Ekweremadu at Agric Bank Junction,
Independent Layout, Enugu, Mr. Brooks Okwara at the same area and Mrs.
Sandra Onu along with her Honda CRV car marked Lagos JJJ 447 CL at New
Haven area.
Ekechukwu disclosed that his men ambushed the gang at a point on
Itu-Calabar Road. According to him, members of the gang tried to escape.
The commissioner said the gang leader, Amos, who had been posing as a
soldier, was shot dead along with another gang member, Otunre Nse.
The police chief explained that the Honda CRV belonging to Onu, in
which she was abducted, was recovered from them. According to him,
police also recovered a gun, victims’ handsets and a fake Army
identification card bearing Corporal Etim Henry Amos.
Other suspected kidnappers included Nonso Onyebuchi of Obeagu Awgu,
who is the leader of another gang, Collins Chime of Obinagu Udi, a
relation of one of the victims and Chukwudi Azemene of Umuoduma Aba,
Abia State.
They had kidnapped Elder Chime Edwin of Obinagu Udi, a United Kingdom
returnee, on April 2 at his house. They whisked the victim away in a
Volkswagen Audi car with registration number DWK 929 PP, which they had
earlier snatched from its owner at Umunede, Delta State. The police also
recovered the car.
