Ebola: Bush meat sellers protest ban in Edo

Ebola: Bush meat sellers protest ban in Edo
Members of the National Bush Meat Sellers Association (NBMSA) took to the streets of Benin, yesterday to protect Edo State Government’s ban on the consumption ‘bush meat’ at state functions and homes.
The state NBMSA Vice-Chairperson, Mrs Comfort Omoruyi, told journalists at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Benin that by the government’s decision, her members had lost over 50 per cent of their customers. She decried the ban, which said, would bring their business to extinction.
Omoruyi said her group was yet to confirm the government decision on the Ebola and described as “a propaganda tool the wild campaign against eating of bush meat”. She said it was a ploy by the developed nations to divert the attention of Africans from the consumption of bush meat as a source of protein. “Most of our customers from the Government House have stopped coming to buy from us.
They told us ‘Oga’ said we should not bring bush meat to the Government House again. In fact, most restaurants, fast food centres and major hotels in Edo State have stopped cooking bush meat because of the fear of Ebola,’’ Omoruyi added.
