The police in Delta State on Tuesday said they had broken up a syndicate of armed robbers, burglars and house breakers.
The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Celestina Kalu, said in a statement in Asaba that the police feat occurred early on Tuesday along Maryam Babangida road, Asaba, ambushed and arrested three members of the syndicate.
She gave the names of the suspects as Sylvester Akere, 30; Henry Ifeanyi, 28; and Gift Nnefejakwu, 28.
“The suspects during interrogation confessed their membership of burglary and house breaking syndicate terrorising DLA/Maryam Babangida road and summit areas of Asaba,” Kalu said.
She added that items recovered from them included one cut-to-size locally fabricated pistol; one iron cutter; three generators; two electric irons; one stabiliser; some laundry cloths; recharge cards of various networks; one DVD player; 70 pairs of wrappers; NECO scratch cards; UPS machine; and one radio.
She said preliminary investigation has revealed that the suspects burgled and stole the items early on Tuesday from a business centre, tailoring and laundry shops along DLA road Asaba. “The owners of the shops have been traced and have identified their properties,” she added.
The PPRO also said the command has arrested a notorious armed robber, named Charles Maduabuchi and four other armed robbers.
Kau said the arrest was made by detectives from ‘A’ Division Asaba. She said the suspects had been terrorising Mile 5 and Ugbolu areas and handed them over to Special Anti-Kidnapping Squad Asaba for investigation.
“The suspects confessed to their criminal activities and named some of their gang members who were at large including one Ekene Amieke said to be their gang leader.
“Operatives of the Special Anti-Kidnapping Squad in a follow-up investigation and acting on a tip off arrested the said Ekene Amieke. The suspect has confessed his involvement in past robbery operations within Anwai/Mile ‘5’ /Ugbolu and environs,” she said.
