Police in Benue State said yesterday that they had arrested the alleged murderer of a policeman, Sergeant Bawa Ekoja, attached to ‘Operation Zenda’ unit. The suspected killer, a commercial motorcyclistturned taxi driver, was arrested with the gun he snatched from the sergeant.
The suspect, whose name could not be ascertained at press time, was reported to have accosted the deceased about 6:30am two weeks ago in an ash Toyota Camry car and shot him in the back thrice and stole his gun.
Ekoja was on his way home after he had closed from night duty at Bem Hotel located at Ankpa Quarters in Makurdi. It was gathered that since the policeman was killed, security had been beefed up within Makurdi metropolis as the police commenced the stop-andsearch exercise, apparently to check the rising cases of criminal activities in the state.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Daniel Ezeala, who confirmed the arrest, said the police recovered the gun from the suspected killer, while investigation into the matter had also commenced.
The killing of the policeman came barely two weeks ago after Governor Gabriel Suswam had raised the alarm over the upsurge in criminal activities in the state and had implored the police to brace up to the challenge.
