A former Head of Department (HOD), Mass
Communication Department, University of Jos (UNIJOS), Dr Hauwa Esther
Kadima, 61, has been reportedly been beaten to death by her son, Daniel.
The body of Kadima, who left Nigeria for the United States, was
discovered on July 28 in her apartment in Longview Texas when Daniel,
31, invited the police.
The suspect’s former wife said Daniel had mental illness. Daniel is believed to have a history of violence. This allegedly led his wife to divorce him. The suspect’s former wife, in a sworn affidavit filed in the Gregg County District Clerk’s Office, recollected past beatings from Daniel.
She said in the affidavit that four years ago Daniel head-butted her, broke one of her teeth and bust her lip. She added that he was also fond of locking her outside their apartment. He had often confined her whenever she wanted to leave home and planted a CCTV in their home, recording activities of their daughter.
She said: “He eventually had a mental breakdown and was arrested multiple times. He was committed to a mental health facility.”
The police said that after killing his mother with a chair, Daniel called the police that there was a “person believed to be dead” inside her apartment. When police got to the apartment, Daniel was asked the last time he saw his mother and he replied that he saw her the day before her death. The police said that he did not tell them the victim’s name or the relationship between them.
According to the police, when Daniel was asked what had happened, he said: “My duty is just to call in and let you know.” The officers found the late Kadima lying on the floor next to a broken wooden chair.
According to initial autopsy conducted on her, Kadima had fractures to her skull, with laceration of the brain because of blunt impact to the head. It did not take the detectives long to draw up the conclusion that Daniel beat his mother to death with the chair.
He was arrested and is being held at the Gregg County Jail with his total bail bond set at over a $100, 000, equivalent to N21.5 million.
A lecturer at UNIJOS, who craved anonymity, confirmed that the late Kadima was a lecturer at the institution before leaving the country for the United States.
He said: “It was true she was a lecturer at UNIJOS and was HOD at various times. We also heard the story and circumstances surrounding her death. But, the incident occurred outside the country.”
