Worried by
the rising incidents of child kidnapping, the Lagos State Police Command has
cautioned parents to be conscious of where and who they leave their children
with.
Police
Public Relations Officer, DSP Joseph Offor told our correspondent that carelessness,
negligence and lack of security consciousness on the part of parents account to
a greater percentage of child kidnapping in the state.
Offor
bemoaned over parents who while leaving for work would make no specific
arrangement for the where about of their children.
He said : “
Child stealing is carelessness and negligence on the part of parents. some
Parents when leaving for work make no specific arrangement for their children.
Some go as well as handing their children over to strangers and neighbors
they barely know. When any thing happens, they would blame the police”.
The PPRO
also cautioned school owners in the state on who they employ. “Some schools
employ people any how without asking of their history and preliminary
investigation about their attitude. It is either they are committing the crime
themselves or accomplices. Some employ rapists without knowing, when they come
to the proprietor or principal’s office , they would survey where the CCT
Camera does not reach, that is where the would take the children and defile
them”.
Offor
disclosed that because of this and other crimes raising ugly heads in Lagos,
the command has embarked on media visibility, creating awareness on personal
security tips . “we are doing everything we can to educate people on security
measures, but because of the issue of confidence , most people would not
believe”.
