Killer cop: Experts demand psychiatric screening for police, soldiers

In order to curb incessant killings by armed policemen and soldiers, psychiatrists have called for a reorientation of officers of the armed forces and the police. 

This is against the backdrop of a mobile policeman, Steven James, who killed three people and himself in Lagos on Saturday.
A psychiatrist and senior resident doctor, Dr. Olusegun Akinwotu, said it is important to subject police officers and soldiers to regular psychiatric screening. “It is important that such officers that carry ammunition while at work should undergo ‘fit employment psychiatric screening,’” he said. Akinwotu, while reacting to killing of three people by a drunken policeman before shooting himself, said: “Those on the job should also undergo psychological and psychiatric re-assessment from time to time.”
