‘How we checked bank robberies in Lagos’

Residents of Lagos State will not forget 2015 in a hurry. It was a year that witnessed series of bank robberies, resulting in deaths. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joseph Offor, in a chat with CAMILLUS NNAJI, reveals steps taken by the Lagos Police Command to check bank robberies
Evaluate the overall security situation in Lagos and the trust Lagos residents reposed on the police.

I’ll score the overall security situation in Lagos presently above average because serious strategies have been put in place by the police, Lagos State Government and other security agencies to secure the state. From the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Solomon Arase, down to Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, a lot is being done to ensure safety of lives and properties in Lagos.
The Lagos State Governor has demonstrated serious commitment by boosting the morale of the security agencies. We have hundreds of brand new vehicles, so many motorcycles, helicopters, speedboats and gunboats deployed to the area of needs.
These have made our task of visible policing easier. Through our visible policing strategy, we have ensured that 10- 20 meters apart, a policeman is on ground as a crime prevention strategy. Again, policemen in Lagos know no public holidays.
We undergo 24 hours policing in Lagos. Even the CP, Area Commanders, DPOs to the last constable are into 24 hours policing. Every policeman in Lagos is aware of the challenges of policing Lagos. Just call any of them, they’ll tell you how serious we are.
Lagos residents have been very useful and appreciative. They are complementing the efforts of the police by coming up with essential information.
This information has helped us to foil crime attempts, even while we wait for more sophisticated, supersonic devices for information gathering. We have done a lot to gain the confidence of people through our sensitisations, advocacy, town hall meetings and community visits. All these are yielding positive results in keeping Lagos safe.
