The Lagos State Police
Command have started probing into the situation that led to a member of the
Special Anti-Robbery Squad(SARS), killing a police officer attached to Area N
Command, Ijede, Ikorodu, Lagos State, on Monday.
Confirming the story,
the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Joe Offor, said
that the SARS operative, identified simply as sergeant Ayo, shot and killed his
fellow police officer over a case of a mistaken identity.
According to Offor, Ayo
and his team members, while on routine patrol, opened fire on another team of
policemen, thinking they were armed robbers.
Preliminary findings
also revealed that the team retaliated on Ayo’s team, under the believed that
they were robbers. The two police teams opened fire on each other, leading to
the death of the deceased.
Offor said: “The
deceased police officer was attached to the Area N Command, Ikorodu. It was discovered that the policeman got
killed in the process when shots were fired by the operatives of SARS and
officers of Area N Police Command. The two teams thought they were both
shooting at robbers. It was a case of a mistaken identity. The SARS officers
who were on patrol at Ikorodu, heard that there was a robbery going on. They
then saw a vehicle and thought it was robbers pursuing them. But the vehicle
belonged to the Area N Police Command, Ikorodu. The Area N Command policemen
also initially thought the SARS operatives were robbers.
“The SARS operatives
pursued the Area N Command Policemen from Ikorodu to somewhere in Ikeja area.
The Area N Command officers abandoned their vehicle at that place and then
opened fire. It was during the process that the policeman got killed. He was
later identified to be a policeman.”
Offor said that the
command was carrying out investigation into the shooting.
