One of the complaints the Police
Service Commission Committee on Public Complaint on Police Conducts would be
deliberating on, is an alleged case of stealing and criminal diversion/conversion of
N1.8million by the Men of the Nigeria Police Force FCT, Command.
According to Ikechukwu Ani, Head, Press
and Public Relations, the money belonged to one Ikechukwu Anthony Nnamani.
Mr. Nnamani in a petition by his Solicitors,
I.C. Ejiofor & Co, complained that on September 30, 2015, at about 9pm at
Apo Bridge, along Area 1, Apo Express Way, he was stopped by a Police team led
by Supol Vincent Ejeh as he was trying to drop a friend by the road side.
He alleged that both his car which
he locked and the N1.8million inside it were taking away and till today he had
faced persecution and intimidation in the hands of the police while trying to
retrieve the money and his car.
The Committee, which was headed by Justice
Olufunlola Adekeye, a retired Justice of the Supreme Court, said that it has received several complaints
against the police.
Cases already slated for the
Committee’s investigation include a case of alleged cheating and gross
misconduct against one Inspector Fortune Bassey serving at the Police Service
Commission Police liaison Desk; a case from the Brekete family on behalf of ASP
Mohammed Yusuf, Sgt. Agada Kenneth and Cpl. Agada Lawrence for wrongful
dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force and another case from the Brekete
Family on behalf of CPL. Abuh Usman, Sgt. Garuba Othaniel, CPL. Shehu Usman and
one Sara Dona also for wrongful dismissal.
After meeting on December 22, 2015,
in Abuja, the committee decided to investigate five complaints brought before
it.
Adekeye said the Commission will
henceforth treat with utmost seriousness cases from the public and even the
Police on Police misconduct.
She advised serving Police Officers
who are victims of Police action in one way or the other to bring their
complaints to the Commission within three months. According to her, the
Committee which has since taken off will ensure that the Police operate within
the law and in accordance with the rules and regulations guiding its
operations.
The Committee is also to investigate
a complaint by one Muhammad Bashiru Liva that Mr. J.J. Akpani, DPO Shendam
Division acted contrary to the provisions of the law, by not accepting the
complaint he lodged at the Divisional headquarters.
Another complaint by Ibrahim Randawa
against one Tanko Tallafi of the same Division will also be investigated.
