Man electrocuted vandalising transformer

A yet-to-be identified man was yesterday electrocuted while attempting to vandalise electric transformer, along Poly Road, Ureje Community area of Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Detectives from Odo-Ado Police Station, who went to the scene, said that a cell phone and some electrical appliances were recovered from the deceased.

The police said that further investigations would reveal the identity of the man. They took the corpse and the ladder away in their van.

The deceased ladder, found close to the transformer, was noticed some minutes after Muslim worshippers in a nearby mosque finished prayers and left the mosque around 6:20am.
One of the residents said: “We thought officials of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BDEC) had come to complete the repair of the transformer which they had stopped working on since December, 2014. That was when we saw the man.”

Spokesperson of the community, Alhaji Jamiu Babalola          and Chairman of the Ajegunle/Ureje Landlord Association, Alhaji Arijoyo Olowoyo, expressed shock over the incident.
Babalola said: "We have been in darkness for almost one and a half years now owing to the transformer which had stopped working. It stopped working because many of its parts had been stolen. It was just about 20 minutes past 6am when we noticed the ladder, but we didn't see anyone. When we moved closer however, we were shocked to see the body of a strange man lying dead by the transformer. We suspected the man might have been electrocuted while trying to steal parts of the transformer.”
The treasurer of the Landlords Union, Prince Ojo Adewale, complained about the power outage in the community.
His words: "Since December 24, 2014, we haven't had power supply in this community. Vital parts of the transformer had been vandalised. We’ve gone to the BDEC, but they insisted people must first settle their indebtedness before they could render such help. Now that this has happened, we want the government to assist us and prevent further damage to the power cables of our transformer. We promise to protect the transformer."

The Public Relations Officer of the BEDC, Ekiti State,
Mr. Kayode Ilori said that the deceased must have started his illegal business early in the morning when there was no power.
Ilori added: "But unfortunately for him and fortunately for us, power suddenly got to the cables. That must have been when he was electrocuted.”

He urged residents to monitor suspicious movements around electricity installations in their communities. He added: “Anyone seen around transformers, posing as an official of the electricity distribution company must be made to identify himself.”
