Usung Ekpo: Detectives to invite hotel manager

Homicide detectives, attached to the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, have concluded plans to invite the manager of the LA Avalon Hotel, Lekki, Ajah, Lagos, where late Usung Ekpo drowned.

It was gathered that the police have refused to treatment Ekpo’s death as mere drowning. They were suspicious that there might be more to his death, than meet the eyes.
According to a police source, Ekpo was a strong swimmer and couldn’t just have died in a swimming pool over an activity that was second nature to him.
The source further said: “The manner he died was very suspicious. He was a good swimmer and according to our findings, he had done two laps and had gone for the third when he drowned. The question is; why should a good swimmer like Ekpo drown in a crowded hotel pool? Where was the hotel pool life guard? Where were the visitors and other swimmers? These and other questions beg for answers. Although we’re waiting for the result of the autopsy, we have to carry out our investigation by investigating the life guard or guards at the hotel. We also must speak with the hotel management and the visitors present when he drown."
Ekpo, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), died on February 14th. Until his death, Ekpo was in charge of the Area K Police Command, Morogbo, Badagry.
Ekpo died around 5pm while swimming at the LA Avalon Hotel, Lekki Ajah area.
Detectives have visited the hotel to investigate the drowning, while Ekpo’s remains had been deposited at a public mortuary for autopsy.

“The hotel manager, the life guard and visitors who were present when the ACP drowned would be invited to SCID for questioning,” said a source. “Ekpo’s death was a rude shock to the Force and the manner of his death was a big embarrassment to the police Force.”
