The NDLEA boss gave the charge at the weekend during a visit by a team of Psychology students to the Agency on an excursion. The Agency also inaugurated Drug-Free Club in the University. This is the first time a school will have a Drug-Free Club inaugurated while on a visit to the NDLEA.
Abdallah warned that drugs
can ruin the vision of a world-class and functional education and send victims
to early graves. “Drug trafficking and substance abuse have made many students
to abandon their academic pursuits. Others have also died prematurely in the
process. Drug-Free Clubs are formed in schools to create awareness and sensitize
students on the dangers of drugs. Having a Drug-Free Club is not an indication
that a school has problem of drug use but a strategy of grooming peer educators
and raising young champions in the campaign against drug trafficking and substance
use. Some predisposing factors of drug use include peer pressure, ignorance, and
involvement of parents. Others are availability
of drugs, desire to keep awake and enhance performance among others” he stated.
The students numbering
forty (40), comprising twenty-five (25) females and fifteen (15) males
currently studying Substance Abuse led by Dr. David Igbokwe and Dr. Muyiwa
Solarin were received by Mrs. Roli Bode-George, Director General of the Agency,
Dr. Lawrence Opara, Director of Training and Manpower Development, Baba
Husseini, Director Drug Demand Reduction and Suleiman Ningi, Coordinator of International
Affairs.
Mrs. Roli in her remarks expressed
optimism that Covenant University students are among the army of young
Nigerians who are disciplined and determined to lead the country to greater
heights. “Let me state that we have many young people like you who are role
models worthy of emulation by others. I want you to remain focused on your
studies because you are the future leaders. There must be pressure at some
points of your lives but you must resist every temptation to traffic and use
drugs. Protect your great destinies by keeping the right association” she
stated.
Miss Oredola Kayode was
nominated as the pioneer President of the Covenant University Drug-Free Club.
The students thanked the management of the NDLEA for the various presentations.
Dr. Igbokwe promised to share the knowledge gained among other students on
their return and also make the Drug-Free Club the most active. “Covenant
University is known to blaze the trail in everything and I wish to assure you
that this Drug-Free Club shall be the most active and impactful. This is the
beginning of a fruitful collaboration and I look forward to a brighter future.
On behalf of the University management, I sincerely thank you for the warm
reception” Igbokwe stated.
