EFCC arrests Union Bank employees for N661m fraud
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended a Kano State branch manager of Union Bank and the Head of Operations for allegedly stealing N661 million from the bank.
The Manager, Samuel Obende, and Head of Operations, Rabiu Alhasan Dawaki, until their arrest,
were at the Bello Road Cash Centre of Union Bank Public Liability Company in Kano.
The suspects, according to the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, used their positions to steal the money. Uwujaren said that the bankers were saddled with the responsibility of evacuating and supplying cash to about 17 branches of the bank in Kano, Katsina, Kaduna and Jigawa states. He said: “In the course of carrying out their duties, they fraudulently conspired and stole the sum of N661,000,000.
In an effort to conceal the illegal act, they fabricated accounting entries, which deceitfully showed that all the monies were sent to the respective branches. Investigation into the fraud continues.”
