Speaker, Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Mr. Kombowei Benson
Some unknown gunmen have abducted Iniokpoemi Benson, the younger brother of Bayelsa House of Assembly Speaker, Mr. Kombowei Benson.
It was learnt that Iniokpoemi was whisked away by his captors early Monday morning at his residence in Korokorosei in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
It was also learnt that the victim, a community leader in the area, was the immediate past Chairman of Korokorosei Community Development Committee.
The abduction of the Speaker’s sibling is one in the rampant cases of kidnapping in the state in recent times.
Just recently, Florentina, the nonagenarian mother of the Senator representing Bayelsa East, Senator Emmanuel Paulker, was abducted.
The elderly woman, who was first abducted in 2010, was whisked away again on July 30 in her Opollo residence area of Yenagoa metropolis.
Also, 86-year-old Benson Adigio-Eseni, an uncle to former Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva, was abducted in Okpoama, Brass LGA.
Speaking on the kidnap of Iniokpoemi, Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hilary Okpara, said on the telephone that the police had got an Incident Report on the incident.
Opara said, “We have got information on the incident. The Divisional Police Officer and an Assistant Commissioner of Police have briefed me.
“The good thing is that we know the direction the hoodlums are heading; so we shall round them up soon.”
Okpara said the Bayelsa Command had promptly deployed its anti-kidnap squad to go after the kidnappers and free the victim.
He explained that the gunmen abducted the speaker’s brother around 3am at his residence in the Southern Ijaw area.
On the abduction of Florentina, 90, the police boss said the police had made some arrests.
The commissioner said, “We have made some progress. We arrested one of them within hours of the incident. The next day, we arrested three more suspects. They are helping us and we are still making more arrests.
“Our investigation revealed that the abductors are members of a syndicate. We have cut off the communication links between the suspects in our custody and those holding the woman. Soon, we shall rescue her.”
