Seven killed, four injured in pirates’ attack
SHOOT-OUT At least seven persons die in gun battle between pirates and private security officers in Ondo State

Seven persons were killed while four others were wounded when suspected sea pirates attacked coastal communities in Ese-Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The victims included seven members of a private security outfit operating in the coastal area of Ese-Odo Local Government who were either killed or injured during the attack. The men working with Gallery Security Services were shot dead while attempting to challenge the operation of the sea pirates.
Three of the sea pirates were also killed by members of the outfit with two of their bodies recovered from the water, while one was still been searched for. It was learnt that the hoodlums, who came from Igbimo area of Edo State, were returning from the operation when they encountered men of the Gallery Security Services.
However, after the operation, the people attempted to escape but sighted the men of the private security outfit at Bolowo junction and opened fire, killing four of the men and wounded others. The Head of the Gallery Security Services, Osaghale Aklugbemen, told journalists yesterday that the attackers escaped through Oroto-Ajapa Road.
According to him, the hoodlums, who invaded the community about 8 am on Sunday, were coming from the Ilaje end. He said men of the Gallery Security Services made several attempts to resist the bandits but were overpowered.
Also speaking, the Chief Executive Officer of Gallery Security Services, Chief Bibopere Ajube, said the robbers had been terrorising the coastal area in the last two years.
He disclosed that his men arrested some of the hoodlums last year and handed them over to the police in Ese- Odo, saying that the activities of the group were yet to reduce despite intense monitoring in the area. In view of the development, however, Ajube solicited government’s urgent approval of access to ammunition for the outfit to enable it to adequately fight crime.
Items recovered from the people include two guns, 260 live ammunition, 10,000 Korean currency, 80 Euro, $24, N4,000, one Nokia mobile phone with SIM cards, one 75 horse power engine boat and one Automated Teller Machine (ATM) of the United Bank for Africa.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Wole Ogodo, gave the name of Gallery Security Services officers killed to include Elemi Obilu, Alimi Zeblon, Idowu Ajaiba and Ofoetitan.
He added that divers were employed to recover the bodies of the dead, saying that six of the bodies had so far been recovered, while one was still been searched for under the water. Ogodo, however, said investigation into the incident had commenced.
