Woman goes ‘mad’ after incarceration with baby, husband

A lady, who was thrown into Kirikiri Prison along with her three-monthold baby and husband, returned from incarceration with signs of mental illness.

The lady, Ayodele Ajayi, was said to have been sent to prison by a magistrates’ court on July 8, 2015, but later regained her freedom on July 29, 2015. She, however, returned home looking confused and mumbling to herself. The baby, Kemi, is not doing well too.
She cries incessantly and had refused to eat. Ayodele’s husband, Wale Ajayi, 40 and his mother, Mrs Kehinde Ifafunke a.k.a. Eritosin were not affected by the prison journey. Ajayi said that a land speculator, known at Igbo-Olomu, Ikorodu, Lagos State as Rosco, working with some policemen at Owutu Police Station, came to arrest his mother because she was always preaching against Rosco in her church.
On the day police came to arrest the preacher, they met her son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter.
The police arrested them. They were charged with disturbing public peace. Before Ajayi knew what was happening, the four of them found themselves in Kirikiri.
After three weeks sojourn in the prison, members of the community, where Ajayi resides with his family, contributed money and got a lawyer. The lawyer eventually got the family out of prison on bail. Since their release, Ajayi had been running from pillar to post, trying to ensure his wife and daughter regained their once sound health.
Ajayi said: “Since we all came back from Kirikiri after being illegally detained on the orders of this land speculator for three weeks, my wife had been behaving strangely. She is always talking to herself. There was a day she ran out of the house almost naked. As for my baby, she cries at odd times and hardly eats any more.”
Recalling how he and his family landed in prison, Ajayi said: “We went to visit my mother who is a prophetess at Igbo-Olomu. We were there when some men, wielding dangerous weapons, stormed the house and arrested us.
They said they were acting on the orders of Rosco, a popular land speculator in the area. They said my mother was always preaching against them in her church and that my mother’s alleged membership with Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), was creating obstacles for them in having smooth operation for their business.”
