Kidnappers yesterday engaged men of the Anambra State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in a gun duel. At the end of the shootout at Nteje in Oyi Local Government Area, the police arrested four of the suspected kidnappers.
The police also rescued a three-year-old daughter of Pastor Louis Okeke of Foursquare Gospel Church in Awka, Miss Kamsi Okeke. The girl was kidnapped in her father’s house at Ngozika Estate in Awka at 9pm Wednesday last week.
The SARS team led by its Commander, CSP James Nwafor, had been on the trail of the kidnappers since the girl was abducted. The suspects had earlier demanded N15 million from the parents but later reduced it to N3 million.
The leader of the gang was said to be the mechanic who always repair the pastor’s car. The suspects forced the pastor and his wife, Franca, to part with their Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards, and emptied the couple’s accounts. Though, the police did not confirm the incident, a senior police officer said the gun battle occurred yesterday morning.
