Owoseni |
Speaking with journalists yesterday at the Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, Owoseni said that he was disappointed over the reports of some journalists that Comfort’s husband, Mr Sunday Godwin, had died.
Urging journalists to always be accurate and confirm their stories before rushing to press, the commissioner said: “Let me state emphatically that Mr Godwin is not dead. I was with him yesterday and he walked round the hospital. Some said he was neglected and abandoned, but he was not.
“Due to the seriousness of the issue, the police implored the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Lagos Teaching Hospital, to carry out surgery.
This was successfully done.” Godwin, a tricycle operator, wife (Comfort) and four children, were returning from a church programme at Jakande area of Lagos while the policemen on a ‘stop-and-search’ duty flagged them down and demanded a N50 bribe.
However, Godwin, who was not carrying passengers but family members, told them he had no money. Angered by his response, the trigger happy corporal, identified as Mr Aremu, corked his gun and opened fire on the family. While Godwin and his wife were short, their four children, among them an 11-year-old baby, escaped death by a whisker. The policemen were said to have jumped inside their patrol van and fled.
Passersby and fellow tricycle operators rushed the couple to the hospital. Speaking further on the actions being taken by the force, Owoseni said: “The IG spoke with victim yesterday. The IG has initiated move to fast track registration of his children in school and to rehabilitate him. Godwin is alive and fine.”
