Goods and property worth several millions of naira were destroyed in
Lagos yesterday when a four-storey building plaza went up in flames.
Highly flammable rubber products such as rubber shoes, bags and other
products were stored in the plaza.
Firefighters from the Lagos State
Fire Service, Federal Fire Service and the United Bank of Africa Plc
battled for more than six hours to put out the fire. The building is
situated at 122 Broad Street, Lagos Island and it consisted of shops,
some of which were converted to warehouses by the owners.
Firefighters were said to have had difficulty in getting to the
source of the fire as the whole building was covered with smoke and had
to rely on aerial ladder. The Director of the Lagos State Fire Service,
Rasak Fadipe, blamed the loss of millions of naira worth of property on
“carelessness.”
It was learnt that the fire started around 10am and it was still
raging fiercely as at 5:30pm. Though the cause of the fire could not be
ascertained at press time, some traders in the area blamed it on “power
surge”. The incident created serious panic around the everbusy Broad
Street as workers and traders around the burning building rushed out of
their offices.
