Police in Ogun State has given a two-week ultimatum to members of cult groups to renounce cultism, surrender their arms and ammunition or face the wrath of the law.
The state Commissioner of Police, Abdulmajid Ali, said those who took advantage of the grace period would not be arrested.
This came as policemen in Lagos State said they had killed a notorious cultist, identified as Anarchy, terrorising Bariga area of the metropolis. Ali gave the ultimatum during the monthly meeting with some Heads of Departments and Divisional Police Officers at the Ibara Officers’ Mess. He said: “All interested cult groups should embrace the amnesty extended to them as no group would be spared after the expiration of the amnesty period.”
At least three people were killed in a deadly clash between rival cult groups at Elega and Ago-Odo areas of Abeoluta, Ogun State capital. Three persons were also killed while houses razed by some suspected rival cult groups on August 30 in Abeokuta.
One of the victims, Ibrahim Alamutu, 32, was said to be the leader of the Eiye Confraternity in the state. The deceased was reportedly killed by Aiye members, who feared he had spiritual powers to ward off bullets.
