Sergeant, others arraigned for kidnapping policemen

A 41-year-old sergeant, Akowe Jacob, and three others were yesterday arraigned before Justice Mohammed Yunusa of a Federal High Court in Lagos by the police over alleged kidnapping of nine policemen.

The accused allegedly kidnapped the policemen on May 24, 2014 at Arepo, a community in Ogun State.
Others arraigned alongside the sergeant on a 10-count charge of terrorism are Godwin German (36), Tamarami Tunwa (23) and Mayibi Hazeez (29). According to the police prosecutor, Raymon Odion, the kidnapped policemen are ASP Abdullahi Bature, Inspector Raymond Oriere, Inspector Usman Muhammed, Inspector Oguntimehin Kolawole and Inspector Tijani Jimoh. Others are Corporals Elogbamen Timothy, Yakubu Aliyu, Usman Abdulkareem and Dauda Mohammed.
Odion added that the four accused kidnapped the policemen about 9am on the fateful day.
The alleged crime was said to have been contrary to Section 2(c) (ii) of the Terrorism Prevention Act. Odion said the four accused were also liable to be punished under Section 33(1) (a) of the same Act, which, according to him, prescribes a jail term of up to 20 years upon conviction.
However, after the charges were read to the accused, they all pleaded not guilty. Later on, the prosecutor sought an order to remand them in prison custody, as well as an adjournment for the start of their trial.
