The West Africa Students’ Union (WASU) yesterday honoured the founder
of the Odua Peoples Congress (OPC), Dr Frederick Fasehun, with the
award of the ‘Most Outstanding African Man of the Year 2015.’
The WASU
President, Ambassador Mensah Kweku, said the award was based on the
antecedents of Fasehun, whom his members had heard and read about while
they were still young.
Kweku, a Ghanaian, said Fasehun captured the world and Africans,
through his human rights activism, his contribution to making Oduduwa
race proud and development of Nigeria.
He said: “We’re here to celebrate brilliance, humility and excellent
leadership. Fasehun has been in the forefront of the struggle before
most of us were born. We are here to celebrate his good deeds. We
appreciate Fasehun for his role in the development of the country.”
Kweku explained WASU, which had been in the forefront of taking kids
off the streets of African countries, to enrol them in school, among
other aims, was particularly worried about the insurgency in Nigeria.
According to him, it is saddening to see Africans killing Africans.
He said: “We don’t understand why this insurgency is happening. We don’t
understand why we are killing ourselves. We are trying to forge a
better future for the youth and students of Africa. We want the nation
to move forward.”
