Women cry out over alleged rape by naval men

When oil pipeline vandals started operating at the Majidun area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, the residents, who had heard terrible stories of explosions and gun battles, had prayed for law enforcement officers to be deployed to the area.

God answered their prayers and armed personnel of the Nigerian Navy were deployed to Majidun to stop pipeline vandalism and arrest the vandals.
Today however, the story has changed at Majidun as residents, are not only praying, but also carrying placards, begging government to remove naval personnel from the volatile area. For long now, the residents had been alleging intimidation and harassment from the naval men.
The last straw that however broke the Carmel’s back was the recent, alleged killing of three men in the community. The victims were said to have been shot by a naval rating that was marking his birthday. The rating was said to have opened fire in a moment of drunken happiness on August 24, 2015, intending to shoot into the air.
The sporadic bullets however got three civilians. The victims were identified as Olarewaju Agbo, Abass and Timothy, all tipper drivers.
The corpses of the three men are yet to be seen however. There are fears that the naval men may have buried them in shallow graves. The community embarked on a series of protests, even marched to Alausa, Ikeja, alleging uniform men brutality, harassment and intimidation.
They also urged the Lagos State Government to instruct the naval men to produce bodies of their slain members.
It was in the midst of this outcry and protests, that some of the ladies residing in the community, opened up, alleging that the naval men used to rape them.
One of the rape victims, simply identified as Aisha, who spoke with our correspondent, said that the rape incidents were so rampant, that parents had to relocate their daughters. Aisha recalled that on the fateful day she was raped, she was going on errand with friends when the naval ratings swooped on them.
She recounted: “I and my friends were returning from somewhere in the community around 7pm, on June, 7 2015, when the naval men stopped us. They ordered us to kneel down, saying they were coming. Before we knew what was happening, they had dragged us into their different rooms and tore our pants and had sex with us! We couldn’t overpower them as they threatened to kill us if we dare to report what transpired to anybody.
