Man to wed dead wife in Ebonyi

A man in Ebonyi State, Mr Stephen Mbam, of Enyi Igwe Village, in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State is set to marry his dead wife, Chinyere, who was stung to death by a scorpion.

This came after a man, Mr. Onyema Orji of Nwakpu Village, Igbeagu Community, was forced to marry his dead wife, Blessing, so as to claim his children. The children had been withheld from him by his in-laws over his inability to pay her bride price and wed her before death.
Chinyere was returning from a wake-keep of her friend, Oge Ogashi, when she was bitten by the scorpion.
She was rushed to a traditional healing home for treatment, but later died in her Mbam’s home.
Her uncle, Ishiali Ikwe, explained that the deceased was returning home after attending the wake keep of her friend when she was stung by the snake.
Ikwe said: “My niece was returning home after her late friend’s wake-keep when something stung her foot. She said she saw a big scorpion, but was unable to kill it as the pain was severe. She was rushed to a place in our village for traditional treatment. She couldn’t respond to treatments given to her and she was rushed back home where she died.”
He noted that the woman had been co-habiting with Mbam for three years and the affair produced a child without the fulfillment of marriage rites. This made Chinyere’s family to put the burial on hold until Mbam performs the traditional marriage rites.
Ikwe further said that Mbam’s family, in line with tradition, has scheduled a date for payment of the bride price to be preceded by the wedding.
Mbam is also expected to buy a big cow for impregnating and having a baby with Chinyere without marriage rites.
