Motorists lose valuables to Lagos traffic robbers

  • Task force seizes 2,358 commercial motorcycles

Armed robbers yesterday had a field day in Lagos as they dispossessed motorists held in gridlock on the bridge linking Costain and Eko Bridge.

The 10-man gang, armed with pistols, knives and machetes, fleeced motorists of their money and valuables. The robbers smashed the windows of some motorists.
Other motorists were said to have quietly handed over their valuables to the robbers to avoid having their cars vandalised. Witnesses said the robbers carried out the operation without challenge, especially as there was no presence of security personnel. Sources said robbery of such nature was not alien to the area.
They listed other black sports as Mile 2, Ijora, CMS Bridge, among several other places prone to gridlock. Motorists claimed that complaints to the police on traffic had not elicited any response from the security agency. But the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Joseph Offor, said the police responded to the distress call.
According to him, the police received the information on the robbery through a situation report. Meanwhile, the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit said it had, in the last six months, impounded about 2,358 commercial motorcyclists also known as okada for plying prohibited roads.
