Flood sweeps pregnant woman, seven kids away

A pregnant woman was among eight people swept away by a violent flood in Delta State.

The victims were said to have been swept away while sailing across the River Niger from Anambra State to its neighbouring Delta State.

The victims were returning from the market to Ndokwa axis of Delta State, through the waterway when the accident occurred.

Confirming the incident at the Government House, Asaba, the Chairman of Ndokwa East Local Government Area, Dr. (Mrs.) Nkechi Enumah-Chukwurah, said even the Okpai Power Plant had come under severe threat.

She added: “We received information of a pregnant woman who went to Anambra and on her way back, was swept away along with seven children. One of the children was later found dead on the bank of the communities. But the pregnant woman and the six other children have not been found.”
She said that it took the uncontrollable rise in the level of the flood in the low-lying parts of the local government area to force some of the resident of the affected communities to agree to evacuate their homes.
