An 83-year-old man, Saliu Oteniya, will spend the next nine months in
prison with hard labour for defecating indiscriminately on his premises
in Ondo in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State.
He was, however, given an option of fine of N15,000. Pa Oteniya was
among 16 landlords in the community sentenced to nine months
imprisonment for violating different environmental offences.
The prosecutors, Elizabeth Akinfemisoye and Adejoke Olanrewaju, said
the octogenarian, who is the landlord of a residential building located
at No 23 Lokun Street in the community, was summoned to the court for
defecating in and around his premises, the offense which the health
officers said, was capable of coursing outbreak of disease in the area.
The landlords were also accused of failing to provide sanitary
dustbins and latrine in their places of domicile, since the existing
ones are filled up and liable to cause disease outbreak in and around
the places.
