Five feared dead in Benin-Onitsha auto-crash



A multiple auto-crash, involving a truck and four other vehicles may have left five persons dead along the Benin-Asaba-Onitsha Expressway.

The accident, which occurred at about 11pm,  adjacent the Oshimili South Local Government Headquarters, along the ever busy expressway yesterday, forced men of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) in the state and other sister agencies, into an unscheduled duty.

One of the ill-fated cars was an ambulance, conveying a corpse from an undisclosed destination to one of the Eastern states.
The truck did not only mangle the ambulance and smashed the Audi Wagon that stood on its way, but dismembered the corpse that was on transit.
Five victims of the accident were immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, for resuscitation, even as the survivors recounted their ordeal.
An eyewitness, Oluchukwu, recounted how the Audi car, which was about to negotiate a dangerous U-turn before the truck speedily crushed it.
“The truck was on top speed and too close to the back of the Audi car. Immediately it ran into Audi, other vehicles behind them, including the ambulance, lost control and followed suit in succession,” Oluchukwu said.
The witness lamented that the corpse in the ambulance suffered a second death.
The FRSC officials at hand declined comment on the occurrence.
