A police corporal has been arrested and detained after he allegedly
shot dead a commercial driver at the Sagamu toll gate, Lagos-Benin
expressway.
The policeman, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, was
said to have killed the 42-year-old driver identified as Olumide Likinyo
on Tuesday night.
The killer cop was said to be a member of a
police team which mounted a checkpoint near the scene of the incident.
Likinyo and seven passengers in his vehicle were on their way to
Okitipupa in Ondo State, having bought goods from Idumagbo area of Lagos
State, when the incident happened.
Eye witnesses said the
unfortunate incident happened at about 9:45pm when the team of policemen
flagged down the driver and ordered him to park by the roadside.
After parking and alighting from the vehicle, one of the policemen, for reasons yet unknown, opened fire, killing the driver.
One
of the passengers, Folake Egbeuwalo, said that the police corporal
gunned down the driver in cold blood. Egbeuwalo said the policemen ran
away immediately the driver died but later came back and took away his
corpse in a patrol van marked NPF 104 OD. She added: “The late driver
was our permanent driver. He used to carry us from Okitipupa to Lagos.
