Detectives attached to the State Criminal
Investigations Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos State, are investigating a
female pastor, over alleged stealing of four kids.
The pastor, simply identified as Esther, who
had her church located at Ijaiye area of Lagos, was said to have become a guest
of the police, after a young lady insisted the clergy stole her baby boy.
Esther already has three kids of her own, but
due to the presently allegation of stealing a member’s baby, the police are now
investigating whether she’s the biological mother of her three kids.
The lady, who opened Esther’s can of worms,
is Christiana Ebele, 24. She’s the mother of the baby boy. The child would be Ebele’s
second kid. But she wasn’t married.
Ebele said she thought Esther was an angel after
she welcomed her into her into her home and church. Esther promised to set up a
business for her, so that she could be empowered and be able to care for the
baby. Ebele said Esther was nice to her until she put to bed.
Ebele said: “After I gave birth, Esther
changed towards me. On the day I went into labour, she refused to take me to
the hospital. She brought a nurse to assist me to deliver. On that day, there
was a heavy rainfall. Pastor Esther took the baby from me immediately I delivered.
She warned me not to touch him. She also told me not to breastfeed him. When
the baby was crying, I attempted to feed him, Esther got angry, slapped and
chased me out of the house. She chased me into the rain.”
Esther was arrested by policemen attached to the Alakuko Police Station after
she went to the station on March 18, 2016, to report a case of child
abandonment in her church. The matter however took a bad turn for Esther when police
learnt that Esther allegedly stole one of her member, Ebele and lied to police
that the baby was abandoned.
Apparently, Esther didn’t expect the police
to pursue the case with tenacity. But the police doggedly pursued the case
until they traced Ebele to where she had gone to lick her wound. Ebele started
singing.
Ebele said: “My boyfriend abandoned me when I
told him I was pregnant. My elder sister took me to her church where I met Pastor
Esther. My sister told her that we were poor and wouldn’t be able to care for
the baby. I was eight months pregnant. She agreed to help me. Pastor Esther promised
she would give me money to start a business and cater for the child after I delivered.
But minutes after I delivered, she changed. When she chased me into the rain, I
left and went to look for my sister who took me to the church.”
She decided to leave everything to God. She heard
that Esther took named the baby Temple and gave him her own surname. Esther
also went to health center, where she registered the birth of the baby and
claimed she was his mother.
Asked if she sold the baby to Esther, Ebele said: “I didn’t sell my baby. I
only approached her for help. She showed me love when I was pregnant but after
I gave birth; she took the baby from me and threw me out in the rain. She said
she could no longer feed me.”
Investigation revealed that Esther registered
the baby at the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, where the
child was immunised.
Fielding questions from detectives, Esther
insisted that she didn’t steal baby, but was taking care of him after his
mother abandoned him in her church and fled.
