Man helps robbers wipe off stolen vehicles’ details

Man helps robbers wipe off stolen vehicles’ details Detectives attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Ikeja, Lagos State have arrested a man who has been making it easy for suspected robbers to snatch and sell cars.

The suspect, Felix Olayinkalu, used to assist a suspected gang of robbers to wipe off snatched vehicles’ registration details from computer at the licencing office.
Olayinkalu was apprehended after some robbery suspects, arrested by SARS, fingered him.
A police source said the suspect was probably part of the gang, working at the licencing office, but he insisted that he was not a robber.
He also denied working at licencing office. “The suspect’s job is to wipe off owners’ information from the computer at the licensing office and input fake details. Once he does that, the car automatically becomes a Tokunbo, instead of a stolen one. Thus, any person who buys it can go and register it. It won’t show that it had been in the system before or was stolen,” the source said.
According to the gang, many of the vehicles snatched are always given to Olayinkalu to prepare the documents.
Olayinkalu reportedly said: “I’m not a ‘staff ’ of licencing office. I have people working in licencing office, who I give money to do the work for me. Once I give them money, they would give me code or password to wipe off the information.”
The suspect said that he used to collect just N50,000 from the suspected robbers to do the job.
He added: “I don’t need to take the vehicle in question to the licencing office. All I need are the engine and chassis numbers. I normally use the licencing office at Kirikiri area.”
Police recovered five number plates from the suspect, a laptop and a fake Electronic Central Motor Registry (ECMR) document. According to the police source, the suspect listed the names of his accomplices and claimed he had done it only five times for the gang.
